Topic: Surname Sheldon

Dear Sir

I've been looking at the Norton Green village online website. Whilst looking at the details of the Sheldon family I noticed Albert Sheldon, born in 1885 and his wife Annie Mayer who were my Grandparents. They moved from Norton Green to Nettlebank.

I've written down a brief family history which I hope may be of use to you in completing the picture on this branch of the Sheldon family.

I am David Sheldon, son of Ernest and grandson of Albert and Annie. An interseting observation is that many of the surnames I remember from Nettlebank in my childhood are on the Norton Green website: Beardmore, Turner, Mayer, Sheldon, Mountford, Payne, Cope and Clewes.

Could it be that there was a migration of Miners from Norton Green to Nettlebank when the local coal mine closed, possibly to work at Sneyd?

Also there is a strong connection with Kidderminster as both Mayers and Sheldons moved there at about the same time.

I hope that you will find this useful in your research of the Sheldon family. Incidentally, had he lived longer today would have been my father Ernest's 99th birthday!

Kind regards

Dave Sheldon

Topic: Surname Hodgskinson/History Norton Green Hall

I am in the early stages of researching our family history and seem to remember being told by my Grandmother that the family had some connection with Norton Green Hall. I know its a long shot but would you happen to know the surname or have any other information of the miner who occupied the hall in the late 1800's. The surname I am interested in is Hodgkinson.

Thank you

John Brandon

Topic: Surname Simcock

Dear Sir,

I wonder if you can help me at all, currently I am researching my family tree and have discovered that my family come from either

Norton or Norton-in-the Moors, this is a bit of a long shot as I believe my family would have resided in either of the two places around 1850 - 1900's the family name is Simcock.

I was surprised to learn that we originate from those areas as I always thought we came from Endon. Stockton Brooke or Leek areas another thing that was a surprise was that the Simcock men folk were colliers (lord knows what I thought they did), my own father was a collier for a period of time so maybe he was just following in family footsteps.

I have also discovered that my great great grandfather James Simcock and his wife, Emily, are both buried in St Bartholomew's Church and that Emily died in 1921/22 aged 77 years. If you are able to help I would be most grateful

Many thanks,

Pauline Salt (nee Simcock)

Topic: Surname Holdcroft, Sheldon, Dale

Hello

What a joy to find your site this morning. I should be doing lots of other things but I am totally wrapped up in it. My Grandmother was Mary Anne Dale nee Holdcroft who married George Dale of Moss Cottage in Heaton. Her father was Jospeh Holdcroft and her mother was Sarah Ann Sheldon the daughter of Elijah Sheldon.

After their parents died. The girls are shown as being split up - 3 with Daniel Holdcroft in a shop and 1 - Charlotte with her Grandfather Elijah Sheldon. You obviously have lots of information. I live in St Albans but I am planning a visit in early July.

At my father's funeral a couple of relatives - I think their name was Turnock said that they had a cousin who had been Mayor of Stoke on Trent. We also have a connection with the Matthews family as my father cut out a clipping about a lady who went to work for one day - didn't like it and stayed in bed for the rest of her life!!!

Many thanks once more for all the hard work I am sure you put into this project.

Regards

Judith Brierley (nee Dale)
