The Sheldon Tree Norton Green/Nettlebank by Dave Sheldon 2010
Albert Sheldon, the son of Elijah Sheldon and Martha Adams, was born 1885 in Staffordshire. He Married Annie Mayer, eldest daughter of Enoch and Mary A Mayer. Annie was born in Kidderminster and lived there until she was at least 14.
In the 1901 census at the age of 14, Annie is described as a “spinning shed worker”. Enoch Mayer seems to have moved to kidderminster as a young man and Mary was possibly a local girl.
The Mayer family moved back to Norton Green in the early 1900s before the birth of Annie's first child. The Sheldon family also had other family members in Kidderminster, and it is likely that Albert spent time there as a young man.
I'm not sure when or where Albert and Annie were married, but it may have possibly been in Kidderminster. Annie had at least 3 brothers, Ralph Mayer, Joseph Mayer and Harry Mayer. Ralph and Joseph were both born in Kidderminster and sadly both perished in WW1. They both lived in Burslem at the time of going to war.
Harry, who I think was the youngest, was probably born in Norton Green. He lived for most of his life in Cliff Street on Nettlebank, and worked as a miner. He never married and died around 1980.
Albert and Annie lived at leek road Norton Green, and then moved to Cliff Street, Nettlebank, and finally to Wedgwood Street, which was re-named Preston Street, also on Nettlebank. They both lived there for the remainder of their days.
They had 5 children Jonathan, William, Harold, May and Ernest (born 1911). Jonathon, born in 1906 sadly died at the age of 3 of Whooping cough.
William, born in 1910 died at the age of 5 of Scarlet Fever.
Harold was fatally injured in 1923, at the age of 15, in a road accident near to Holden Bridge.
Albert Sheldon fought in WW1 and survived albeit unable to work again. He died in 1950 of breathing difficulties resulting from being gassed and wounded in WW1. His occupation before the war was coal hewer.
Annie died suddenly in 1972 at the age of 85, and was buried with her husband Albert and son Harold in Burslem cemetery.
Albert and Annie Sheldon's daughter, May, married Eddie Stanley in 1936 and had one son. Tragically Eddie died suddenly in the mid 1950s. Their son married and had two children, all live locally.
Albert and Annie's son Ernest married Mabel Moss of Tunstall in 1949.
Their only son (the author of this document) was born in 1951. Ernest was born at Leek Road Norton Green, and spent most of his working life at Doultons in Burslem.
Ernest and Mabel lived at Louise Street in Burslem until Albert,'s death when moved to Wedgwood Street (Preston Street) to live with Ernest’s mother, Annie Sheldon (Nee Mayer).
Upon the birth of their son, they moved to King William Street Tunstall, where they lived for approximately 6 years before moving to Preston Street, Nettlebank, next door to Ernest’s mother Annie Sheldon.
Both Mabel and Ernest lived in Preston Street, Nettlebank for remainder of their days. Mabel died in 1989, Ernest died after a short illness in September 2008 at the age of 97.
May lived at Preston Street, just across the road from her mother Annie and brother Ernest, until she died.
Tom Stockley, his wife Alice (Nee Mayer ... Annie's younger sister) lived next door to May in Preston Street.
Wilfred Sheldon, his sister Annie, (Ernest and May's cousins), and their mother Elizabeth also lived Preston Street. Neither Wilfred nor Annie ever married.
After Elizabeth and Annie died, Wilfred's other sister Hanna moved up from Kidderminster to live with Wilfred in Preston Street. This further strengthens the link to the Kidderminster area.
I also remember stories about Bewdley, and a story that my Great Grandfather Mayer was a policeman there and moved back to Norton Green, but I can't confirm this.
Looking back it's almost like the Sheldons and Mayers tried to re-create Norton Green in miniature on Nettlebank. There remained a strong family bond which made Nettlebank a great place to grow up!
